It's easy when researching pre-20th century ancestors to focus on local tax records. They may have also had Federal tax obligations. The United States federal government began levying revenue taxes back in 1791 with a tax on distilled spirits. Soon after, other items such as carriages, refined sugar, and snuff were also taxed. The records that came from these taxes are an overlooked resource for genealogists. Though not all the tax records themselves may survive, newspapers end up providing some insight into some of those earliest Federal Taxes.
